WAQA Cancer Fund Raising Event

On the May WAQA sewing day / night we had a very successful cancer fund raising event.

Kath Mazzella raised our gynaecological awareness especially regarding issues of the vulva. Kath is very highly regarded and holds many awards including : Australia Day Ambassador, 2018 WA Senior Australian of the year and Order of Australia Medal for her work in raising such awareness. Kath thanked WAQA members for their past quilts which have been used to promote gyney health both here and overseas, and she encouraged quilters to be creative for the ‘Red Knickers & Gynaecological Awareness Day on Sept 10 2022.

Activities on the day included raffles, silent auction, games including heads and tails and ball throwing and a ‘bean count ‘ vote to determine which cancer group would receive our support this year.

Isobel Pearson with a few willing helpers managed to cut and assemble 2 quilt tops from the scrap stratas brought in by members. There are enough scraps and stratas for several more!

I am pleased to report Gynaecological cancers received the most votes followed by Breast and then Brain. We raised a total of $1625 which will now be forwarded to the appropriate agency.
Thank you to all members for joining in the fun and so generously supporting the event .
