Breaking the Bias at Sewing Day and Night

At last week’s Sewing Day and Night we celebrated the International Women’s Day campaign theme: #BreakTheBias. Just before Show ‘n’ Tell at Sewing Day members stood to ‘Strike the Pose’ to show solidarity and support for breaking the bias against women. The photo was uploaded to the International Women’s Day website.

Phil Thomas continued with the day’s theme in her popup on Bias in quilting. Members learnt how to cut bias strips from fat quarters and larger pieces of fabric. Phil also demonstrated how to make bias binding, bias tape and use handy little tools called bias makers. Members were also shown examples of Phil’s work in bias tape applique on quilts. Phil has provided notes on all she covered with links to website pages and youtube tutorials for additional information.

Purple is the colour of International Women’s Day and Community Quilts managed to find quite a few purple quilts for their traditional display of quilts. Whilst the CQ BOM was not purple, it did attract a lot of interest from members. Deb Keating a very new WAQA member presented the Crazy Log Block of the month, doing a great job in coming up with the block design, cutting up the fabric, writing up the instructions and then demonstrating how the block is put together. Well done Deb!

The projector screen was used at Sewing Day and Night to run a slide show of the notices for the month interspersed with the sponsors banners. The notices included the Launch of QuiltWest 2022 with entries opening on 9th May, a list of upcoming workshops, reminder of the Amazing Asia event at the next General Meeting and the stitched and bound exhibition dates with entries now open.

The Show and Tell as always included a variety of quilts that continue to demonstrate how amazing and talented are the WAQA members.
