Dyeing Fabric in a Microwave

Wednesday 4th May’s workshop started with show and tell of Phil Thomas’s wonderful finished products and headed straight into how to make one for ourselves.

The studio at Alexander Park Craft House was perfect for a Microwave Dyeing workshop - enough space for 10 people, two microwaves, various kettles, 2 sinks and a drying area!

Fabric was folded using Japanese Shibori techniques and dyed using Rit liquid dye. Using a microwave means you can dye lots of small pieces very quickly, experimenting with different shibori methods in the process.

With all the props to make different patterns, everyone started their own collection. The smiling when the unveiling occurred was the best part.

A fantastic workshop. Can’t wait to see the finished articles.
